Pembroke, NC

Devin Green (he/him) is a transmasculine junior at UNC-Pembroke, where he is a political science major (pre-law concentration) and a member of the Honors College. Devin plans to attend law school in the Fall of 2022 to pursue a career as a civil/human rights attorney. He also wants to be a congressman, directly advocating for equity under the law. Devin has been doing activism since he was 12, lobbying and fighting for criminal justice reform, LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, etc. Outside of activism, Devin enjoys playing instruments and watching documentaries.

He is a part of Equality NC's Rural Youth Empowerment Fellowship, where he's working specifically on bridging the gap between his campus administration and LGBTQ students. As he's working toward inclusion on his campus, he's also eager to see cities, towns, and counties across North Carolina take action to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination. He views these nondiscrimination ordinances as one important piece of the work toward lived and legal equality for all LGBTQ North Carolinians, who beyond facing discrimination in employment, housing, and public spaces also are subjected to disproportionately high rates of violence, harassment, and HIV.

In 2020 on the International Transgender Day of Remembrance and Resilience, Devin wrote a piece honoring the lives of the many trans folks, including many Black trans women, who were killed. He challenged all people to work hard to dismantle anti-LGBTQ bias, racism, and misogyny, writing, "Let us continue to fight for legal protections for our community. But let us not forget that the work starts with ourselves, recognizing our biases and blindspots. Let us not forget to hold ourselves accountable in the same ways that we hold our oppressors accountable. Our lives and the lives of our siblings depend on it."
