TUESDAY: LGBTQ Advocates Mark 1-Year Anniversary of Campaign to Protect North Carolinians from Discrimination

On Tuesday, December 7, advocates, elected officials, and LGBTQ community members will gather for a virtual community panel and conversation marking the first anniversary of the NC is Ready for LGBTQ Protections campaign, which worked to pass 16 local LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances in North Carolina this year.

The NC is Ready effort launched in December 2020 on the day that a key prong of HB142, the anti-LGBTQ law that replaced the state’s infamous HB2, expired, opening the door for cities, counties, and towns to pass local ordinances protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination. Since then, 16 local governments have adopted – with unanimous and bipartisan support – nondiscrimination ordinances that protect people from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, natural hairstyle, and other categories, in private employment and public spaces. Nearly one third of North Carolinians now live in a jurisdiction with inclusive protections, up from zero just one year ago.

Media and community members are invited to join Equality NC, the Campaign for Southern Equality, and NC is Ready partner organizations for a virtual event celebrating a big year of LGBTQ progress for North Carolina.
