Celebrating Passage of LGBTQ Nondiscrimination Ordinance in Wendell

Last night, the town of Wendell, North Carolina unanimously passed a motion to join the existing nondiscrimination ordinance in Wake County, to become the 19th city or county to have a full LGBTQ+-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinance.

Kendra R. Johnson, Executive Director of Equality North Carolina, released the following statement:

We’re so pleased to see Wendell join the other 18 cities and counties in North Carolina which have passed nondiscrimination ordinances. Our communities deserve to feel safe from bigotry, and we applaud the town for taking this action for lived equality. Wendell passing this is a small yet crucial step for racial and social justice in North Carolina.

Studies show that one-third of LGBTQ people – including three-fifths of transgender people – have experienced discrimination in the past year. In a national context which has seen so much racist and anti-LGBTQ discrimination and legislation, it’s heartening to see strong allyship from local leaders. Polling shows that 67% of people in North Carolina support protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination.

Through the NC is Ready for LGBTQ Protections campaign, led by Equality North Carolina and the Campaign for Southern Equality, a diverse array of voices has spoken out for LGBTQ protections at the local, state, and federal levels. Learn more at www.ncisready.org.
